[News] You can register for a .nz domain name today
As of 1pm today, New Zealanders have a choice of two local, simplified domains for their websites and email addresses, .kiwi and .kiwi.nz launched in May this year, but as of today New Zealanders can also register the newly simplified .nz domain name.
If you already have a .nz domain name you may be able to get the shorter version of it before anyone else. This is called the Preferential Registration Eligibility (PRE) period and this period begins today at 1pm and ends at 1pm, 30 March 2015.
There are four main statuses that you could be in when trying to register for your .nz domain name:
Will be Available
You can try and register the shorter version of the name on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis from 1pm, 30 September 2014.
Will be Conflicted
Your name has been registered in at least two second levels. To get the shorter version you’ll need to go through the ‘conflict’ process from 1pm, 30 September 2014.
Will be PRR (Preferential Registration or Reservation)
You’ve got Preferential Registration or Reservation eligibility and can register or reserve the shorter version of your name before anyone else.
Will be Prohibited
No-one is able to register the shorter version of the name.
Registering one of the new .nz names is done in the usual way – through a registrar or domain name provider. Reservations and conflicted names are dealt with at a special website – anyname.nz.
