[News] Hulu Blocks Its Service for VPN Users

Hulu VPN Block

Hulu has begun to block users this week that use a VPN service in a bid to prevent overseas people from paying them and making money… no, not really, but you get the idea. Because of this VPN restriction, it is also blocking legitimate users in the US who use a VPN to access the site securely and to surf the internet securely and anonymously.

Ironically, Hulu and other legal US-based streaming providers have been proven to slow down piracy rates in the US, but this move may have suddenly increased the piracy rates in the US.

Users (whether in the US or not) don’t want to have to stop browsing the internet securely just because a service provider doesn’t allow them to! Most will either find an alternative that allows them to use a VPN (of which may include legal or illegal services) or find another VPN provider that provides dedicated IP addresses. Dedicated IP addresses ensure that no other user on the network has registered an account under that same IP address, and will be harder for Hulu to block.

How is Hulu blocking VPN users?

Hulu is currently blocking a range of IP addresses that are from known VPN service providers.

Currently I am on Slingshot’s Global Mode, which is essentially a VPN service but at the service provider level and I can confirm that Hulu still works on that.

Hulu have not made a public announcement about this blockage yet.
