[News] HDMI Version 2.0 Officially Unveiled
The HDMI Version 2.0 has been officially announced prior to the expected release date at IFA 2013! This newer version is a significant upgrade from the earlier versions and will be the first one to be developed by the HDMI Forum!
HDMI Licensing has been chosen by the HDMI Forum to provide licensing for the 2.0 Version of the HDMI Specification.
“We are pleased to continue our work in supporting the HDMI Adopter base as well as the entire HDMI ecosystem,” said Steve Venuti, President of HDMI Licensing. “Adopters can now continue to develop new product functionality over the HDMI interface as well as look to HDMI Licensing, LLC as their single contact for all their licensing and administrative needs.”
HDMI 2.0 supports a bandwidth capacity of up to 18Gbps and has enough space to carry 3,840 x 2,160 (4K) resolution video at up to 60fps. It also has support for up to 32 audio channels, dynamic “lip-sync” and extensions to CEC. HDMI 2.0 will also be backward-compatible to the previous/earlier versions of the HDMI Specification.
“The introduction of the HDMI 2.0 Specification represents a major milestone for the HDMI Forum,” said Robert Blanchard of Sony Corporation, President of the HDMI Forum. “Our members collaborated closely to take the highly successful HDMI Specification to the next level by expanding audio and video features for consumer electronics applications.”
No new cables or connectors are required for Version 2.0 and current category 2 cables are already capable of carrying the increased bandwidth. The HDMI Compliance Test Specification (CTS) is expected to be released before the end of this year.
We will hopefully find out more about the integration of HDMI 2.0 at the upcoming IFA 2013 event!
