Do you need the Chromecast APK?
I had ordered my Chromecast device last month on the 25th, so now it is on the way to my house through NZ Post’s YouShop service. It has arrived in New Zealand and is currently going through Customs. But one thing I didn’t have until now, is the Chromecast APK for my Android device! Because the Chromecast device is only available for purchase in the US currently, so is the Chromecast app! Therefore I had to search long and hard for one online…
If you are also like me, who has purchased a Chromecast device but haven’t got the APK because of the geo-restriction on Google’s Play Store, I have decided to make life easier for you! I have attached a link at the bottom of this post, that will automatically download the Chromecast APK (for Android) for you. If you are doing this from a computer, you will need to transfer the app to your Android device, make sure that the “Unknown Sources” button is checked in your settings (this just allows you to install apps that didn’t “come” from the Play Store), then find the Chromecast APK to install it.
Unfortunately, if you are using a mobile Apple product (i.e iPhone, iPod, iPad), there is currently no app for you to download from the App Store, which means you will have to head over to: https://cast.google.com/chromecast/setup on your iDevice’s browser and set it up from there. It is not currently known if the app is still being processed by Apple in the App Store, or that Google hasn’t submitted an app for iOS yet. So therefore, if you need to reset the Chromecast, you will either have to borrow an Android device, or reach out to the back of your TV to do a “manual reset” of the Chromecast device.
I was also lucky enough to be one of the last people to get the free 3-months Netflix voucher with the purchase of my Chromecast! The voucher has been sent out to me, but unfortunately the Netflix app does not work on the Android device because of the geo-restriction.. yes, this thing again. Unless you have a special service and have tweaked your DNS settings on your router, you most likely won’t be able to play Netflix on your smartphones/tablets. Therefore, I will be using Netflix on my computer (either using my iTwin VPN or HOLA) then casting it to the TV.
I’m not sure if I will be able to get my hands on my Chromecast device by the end of this week, but when I do, I will be doing a review of it right here on NZ TechBlog! Yes, you are probably thinking: “Oh no, not another review! I’ve read/seen too many Chromecast reviews already!” But the more you read, the more you will understand about the Chromecast device! Plus, why not improve your reading skills as well?! 😆
[UPDATE 25/10/13: Google has finally made the official Chromecast app for Android available for users outside the US, so this is the final version (V1.2.11) we will be updating the direct links to.
