[News] Two New “Galaxy Mega” Smartphones Announced by Samsung
Yesterday, Samsung announced two new Mega smartphones, in line with its Galaxy range. They are called the “Samsung Galaxy Mega” smartphones.. or phablets? Or maybe even a tablet? You decide!
One of the two Mega phones is 5.8 inches in size and the other is a 6.3 inch phablet.
The 6.3″ model incorporates an ‘HD display’ at 1280×720 resolution, with an ‘average’ dual-core 1.7GHz processor. It comes pre-loaded with Android 4.2 Jellybean (most likely with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top) and an 8-megapixel shooter. This model has LTE and HSPA radios, and you’ll get GPS and GLONASS support to aid you in location-based activities. Plus it packs a 3,200mAh battery (which may seem like a huge number to start with, but might not last as long with such a massive screen), with internal storage of 8 or 16 GB dependent and support for a microSD card, up to 64GB.
Meanwhile, the 5.8″ model is a HSPA-only model (no LTE), and obviously, is smaller in size. The screen resolution drops to a ‘qHD display’ of 960×540 and houses a slightly lower spec’d dual-core processor with a clock speed of 1.4GHz. The same 8-megapixel camera is found in this model as it was in the 6.3″ model, but it will only come in an 8GB model, and also includes support for a microSD card of up to 64GB. The battery juice for this model is a slightly lesser 2,600mAh.
Both devices have 1.5GB of RAM and a 1.9MP front-facing camera.
Software features will also be included with both versions of the Mega phablets; they include: Air View, Multi-Windows and multi-tasking, and Pop-up play.
While this is bigger than the Galaxy Note and Note II, there will be no S-Pen included with both of these devices, but the S-Memo and S-Planner apps are included.
No word has been said on pricing, or its availability in New Zealand, but it was said that these two devices were headed to Europe sometime next month. We can expect more release dates and pricing nearer to the time.
Do you see yourself using these phablets in the near future?
